Employee management REST API

A Django REST Framework API with JWT authentication, request-logging middleware and a GitLab CI pipeline.

01The problem

What it had to solve.

Employee records tend to live in a spreadsheet that every internal tool then needs its own copy of. The fix is one authenticated API that owns the data and lets other systems read it.

02The build

How it was put together.

  • Full CRUD over employee records — name, email, salary, phone — through DRF viewsets
  • Signup and login issuing JWT tokens, with authentication enforced at the view layer
  • Serializers handling validation, so bad data is rejected at the boundary rather than in the database
  • Custom middleware logging every request, which is what makes production debugging possible
  • PostgreSQL for storage and a GitLab CI pipeline for automated checks on push

What it demonstrates

  • A REST API designed to be consumed by other systems, not just one front end
  • Token authentication implemented properly rather than bolted on
  • CI configured from the start, so the pipeline is not a retrofit

A first call is thirty minutes, costs nothing, and ends with a straight answer about whether we are the right group for it — plus the names of the specialists who would actually do the work.
